The Post-it Note That Changed Everything: How Carla Canonico Built A Needle Pulling Thread

Carla is the co-founder, publisher, and editor in chief of A Needle Pulling Thread magazine, along with the online blogs Quilt Social and Knit Much.
Imagine launching your first magazine by handing out ten thousand copies at a trade show, and a few days later a reader walks up with a copy covered edge to edge in post-it notes. That is exactly what happened to Carla Canonico back in 2005. And instead of feeling attacked, she found a gift.
She had no formal publishing background. She had a mother who sewed at the kitchen table every weekend, a grandmother who knit until two weeks before she passed away, and a lifelong habit of cutting pictures out of catalogs just to arrange them beautifully on a page. That was it. That was the whole resume.
So when that reader approached her with a first issue covered in sticky notes, Carla could have panicked. Instead, the woman said something that changed the trajectory of the business: "I really want this to succeed." She pointed out the details that turn a hobby project into a professional magazine. Carla listened, applied what she learned, and kept going.
Twenty years later, A Needle Pulling Thread is still independently run by Carla and her husband, who handles the administrative and technical side. They have expanded into Quilt Social and Knit Much, sponsor-supported online blogs and magazines that reach readers for free. Along the way, Carla has had to learn things she never trained for, InDesign, sponsorship structures, how to edit her own writing, how to manage a stable of designers and writers.
One of the most useful things she shares in this conversation is what she tells the designers she works with when she asks them to start making video reels. Many of them have never done it and feel completely unqualified. Her answer is simple. You do not have to be good at video. You have to be knowledgeable, and you can always get good at the delivery. It is never live. You can record it ten times if you need to.

Carla did not wait until she knew everything. She started, she listened when someone offered honest, generous feedback, and she kept refining for twenty years.
