Member Spotlight: Saba Asim

Introducing Saba Asim, from Dubai, a quilter, embroiderer, textile artist, and teacher.

"The learning has been amazing but what I appreciate most is the community, especially my accountability group, who have been instrumental in lifting my spirits and always giving good advice. Thanks to Lyric for bringing us all together."

Saba was born and brought up in India, but feels more Arab, having lived in the Middle East for over 27 years. She now lives in Dubai with her husband and three children. While she was raising her children, she divided her time between housekeeping, babysitting, and a short stint at Middle School teaching. However, during all this time, the sewing machine never left her side.

What do you teach?

I am an artist, quilter, embroiderer and teacher. Playing with needle and thread has been my hobby since I was a kid. When that hobby turned to passion, I do not remember. I teach quilting techniques at beginner and advanced levels, hand embroidery and Chikankari (a very special type of embroidery art from my city in India).

Why do you teach?

It gives me great pleasure to be able to share my skills with eager learners and to be able to help build their creative confidence, stitch by stitch. The happy faces of my students when they achieve small goals as they work on their projects from beginning to completion is the single most valuable source of joy for me. I love to motivate them to keep going and never give up, to embrace their imperfections, to understand that finished is better than perfect.

What else do you love?

I love nature and I love to travel, and to click lots of pictures of the places I visit!

You can see more about Saba on her website at To Thread Or Knot, and on Instagram as thread_or_knot.
