Academy Member Spotlight: Teresa Coates

Introducing Teresa Coates, a maker and writer with a penchant for sewing, quilting, teaching, and adventure.

"In the AVT Academy, I've appreciated the feedback from other folks and seeing different perspectives on teaching. I'm looking forward to learning more as I return to a studio for filming and creating my own workshops."

What do you teach?

I teach people to love sewing, or at least that is my goal! I work with intimidating fabrics, particularly Cuddle® Minky, and teach sewists the techniques and tools that make these fabrics easier to manage. I want folks to feel empowered to be able to tackle a variety of projects and types of sewing, so I work hard to diversify the projects that I'm teaching. I do a weekly live workshop called Sew Together Tuesday, as well as in-person classes across the country.

Why do you teach?

I love teaching and getting the chance to share my knowledge and enthusiasm with others. I want others to love sewing as much as I do. There is so much that I have learned through experience and the opportunity to work with a lot of different fabrics, machines, patterns, and educators; and I'm grateful to share that with others who may not have those opportunities.

What else do you love?

I love to travel and have been lucky enough to incorporate this into my teaching life. In the past year, I've visited 40 states and taught at quilt shops of all sizes across the United States. It's been a fabulous adventure and I can't wait to get to Alaska and Hawaii (the last two states before I've been to all of them!).
