Enjoy this interview with AVT member Erin R.

Introducing Erin R. of Jersey City, NJ. She currently works as an adult Ed ESL teacher as well as a freelance knitting and crochet instructor. Her goal is to build her knitting and crochet 'hobby business' into a real, full-time business.

What do you teach?

Right now, I teach knitting and crochet beginner through advanced level as well as teaching children aged 8 and up. I teach online, in person, as well as in an after-school program in New York City working with middle school students.

Why do you teach?

I teach because I enjoy helping students accomplish a new skill or hobby and to be inspired to share their creativity. I also really enjoy working with youth because knitting and crochet teach self-sufficiency and also help to build classroom community with evidence of reducing bullying in the classroom. I also read an article that said the solution to fast, (i.e. "disposable") fashion is to teach people to sew - and of course, knitting and crochet also fall into this realm.

What else do you love?

I also love to go hiking and take walks in nature. I live in an urban environment right now, but my long-term goal is to find a home in which I feel directly connected to the natural world.
