Meet Your Mentor: Lyric Montgomery Kinard
Hi, I’m Lyric Kinard — and for over 15 years, I’ve taught creative workshops to thousands of students around the world, both in person and online.
I’ve launched dozens of successful courses in quilting, surface design, and fiber arts and helped hundreds of other creative teachers bring their workshops online through the Academy for Virtual Teaching.
Along the way, I learned that the most important step isn’t building the course — it’s knowing how to invite students in. That’s what this Lab is about: helping you craft your offer, open enrollment, and welcome real students before you create a single lesson.
If you’ve got something to teach but haven’t known how to begin, I’ll walk with you through the launch process. You don’t need a finished course. Just your skills, your voice, and a plan.

What is the time commitment?
Each step includes a micro-action that takes 20–30 minutes. You can do it in your morning coffee time or during lunch. And if life gets in the way? You’ll have lifetime access to catch up later..
What if I miss a day and fall behind?
All lessons are recorded and added to your dashboard, so you’ll never miss a thing. You can watch anytime, on your own schedule.
What if I don’t even know what I want to teach yet?

How long will I have access to the course materials?
Rewatch lessons, refresh your skills, and learn at your own pace. Anytime. You'll have access to the course as long as the Academy for Virtual Teaching exists.
Will we be building the actual workshop?
No. This is not about making slides or recording content. It’s a launch challenge—you’ll get your workshop into the world, with paying students, before building the content. (Then you’ll deliver it with your students, not for them.)
Do I need any specific software or apps?
Lyric will be creating her demo course on the Zenler platform but she encourages you to use whatever platforms you already have in place. Zenler is an all-in-one platform that can fill all your needs if you are a new online teacher and has a 30-day free trial period.
Is this only for quilters?
No. It’s for all visual educators. If you teach through hands-on demos (fiber art, painting, sculpture, etc.), this is made for you.
